Use a concept map to expose the connections

A map becomes useful when its lines explain relationships.

A concept map places ideas on a page and connects them. The important work is deciding what the connection means. A line labelled “causes,” “is an example of” or “depends on” says more than an unlabeled line between two words.

Start with a few concepts from a passage, then check each link against the text. A gap or uncertain connection can reveal what you need to reread. The map is a tool for examining your understanding, not a test of how neatly you can draw.

A small example

Connecting “plant,” “sunlight” and “photosynthesis” is only a beginning. Labelling the relationships makes the explanation visible.

Keep in mind

An attractive map can still contain a mistaken relationship; check the content before polishing the layout.
